5 Simple Ways to Improve Cash Flow
Educational resource for small-business owners

Cash flow is about timing as much as profitability. A business can be profitable on paper and still feel cash pressure if customers pay slowly or expenses hit before collections arrive.
1. Invoice as soon as the work is billable
Do not let completed work sit unbilled. Define who triggers invoicing, what documentation is required, and how quickly invoices should be sent.
2. Review receivables weekly
Use an aging report or tracker to identify balances moving into 30, 60, and 90+ day buckets. Prioritize larger and older balances and document every follow-up.
3. Make payment easier
Clear remittance instructions, electronic payment options, and accurate AP contacts reduce avoidable delays.
4. Watch recurring expenses
Review software, subscriptions, insurance, merchant fees, and other recurring charges quarterly. Small leaks become meaningful over a year.
5. Build a 30-day cash outlook
List expected collections and major payments for the next month. Even a simple forecast gives you time to change timing, accelerate follow-up, or delay discretionary spending.
